Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Swami Temple is situated in Ambalappuzha. It is a place in Alappuzha district of Kerala(14km from Alappuzha district). Ambalapuzha is about 60 km from Ernakulam and 120 km from Thiruvananthapuram. This temple is belived to have been constructed by the local ruler Chembakassery Pooradam Thirunal-Devanarayanan Thampuran, during 15th – 17th centuries.
The idol at Abalappuzha caries a whip in the right hand and a shankhu (sacred conch) in the left. The temple is directly associated to Guruvayoor Srikrishna Swami Temple. For safe keeping, the idol of Sri Krishna from the Guruvayoor Temple was brought to the Ambalappuzha Temple. Because it was 1789 and many Hindu temples were destroyed by Tippu Sultan at that time.
The storey behind Ambalappuzha Srikrishna Swami Temple
Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple is often refered to as Dwaraka of South. The temple enshrines Lord Krishna in the form of Parthasarathy (an aspect of Lord Krishna taken during the Mahabharata war). Lord Krishna is popularly known here as Unnikannan (child Krishna)(BalaKrishna). The child form of Krishna is very powerfull.
The storey of this temple is associated with the great sage Vilwamangalam Swamiyar. The sage behind the costruction of Sripadmanabha Swami Temple Trivandrum.
It is believed that one day Pooradam Thirunal Thampuran and Saint Vilwamangalam Swamiyar was traveling along the backwaters.Suddenly they heard melodious sound from a flute.Vilwamangalam Swamiyar was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. The sage got a vision of Lord Krishna playing flute on a Peepal tree(Arayaal)(Ficus religiosa). Feeling the presence of God, Thampuran decided to build a temple at this place.
Ambalappuzha Paal Payasam
Amabalappuzha paal Payasam is very famouse among all devotees. Paal payasam is a sweet porridge made of rice, milk, and sugar. Just like Kheer.Kheer is little bit diffrent from Payasam. You will get payasam in every Sri Krishna temples in Kerala. But in Ambalappuzha the taste of the Payasam is different. Nobody knows the seceret behind the recipe. Many famous chefs from different states tried to made the Payasam, but failed.Because you can feel the amazing taste only in the prasadam which is available inside the temple. That is the importance of Ambalappuzha Paal paayasam. The taste is entirely different from other payasam. My words are not enough to explain the taste of Ambalappuzha Paal payasam.
Ambalapuzha Arattu is the main festival celebrated at the temple for 10 days during the Malayalam month of Meenam (March – April). An important feature of the temple festival is the Velakali ( a unique martial dance form performed during temple festivals).
Champakulam Boat Race is held on the Prathista day (idol installation day) of Ambalapuzha Sreekrishna idol in the temple.
There is another important ritual named Ambalappuzha Moolakazhcha, held in the temple during the Malayalam month of Mithunam on the Moolam asterism (Mool Nakshatra).
